Roberto Bongiovanni received his musical training at the Rome Conservatory “S. Cecilia”, graduating with degrees in Orchestral Direction, Choral Direction, Composition, Piano, Music Teaching
His experience in different fields of music emerges in his own profession of conductor. He cooperated with many important italian agencies and orchestras (for example Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the OperaEnsemble of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, Orchestra di Roma e del Lazio …), as well as many foreign orchestras including: OSPA- Sinfonic Orchestra of Baleari (Palma di Maiorca – Spain), Sinfonic Orchestra of Principato of Asturias (Oviedo – Spain), Sinfonic Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio (Sofia – Bulgaria), National Sinfonic Orchestra Ceca (Praga – Repubblica Ceca), MSO-Mostly Symphonic Orchestra (Seoul)…
He has been widely reviewed and appreciated by his audiences and enjoyed reviews in the top italian musical journal such as “L’Opera”, “Auditorium” (of ‘Parco della Musica’ in Rome), “Opera Click”.
He was the principal conductor of: ”Orchestra Sinfonica Romana” (in the 2005-2006 season productions of “Aulico-Opera&Musica” in collaboration with Teatro Capranica of Rome); “Accademia d’Opera Italiana” (2001-2004); “Arciconfraternita Vaticana di Sant’Anna de’ Parafrenieri” in Rome (1999-2000); Orchestra “Aureus Concentus” of Rome (1995-1999), specializes in performances of unedited and unknown Italian music from the ‘700 e ‘800, cooperating with international artists such as T.Pinnock, F.Brüggen, ecc.) and in prestigious occasions (for example, for world vision Television, he conducted the Sacred Mass held by Pope Saint Giovanni Paolo II in the Chiesa Nuova of Rome); “Coro di Voci Bianche” of the middle school of the Conservatorio S.Cecilia of Rome” (1996-1998).
Bongiovanni’s repertoire spans from early music to chamber music, opera, choral and orchestral/symphonic music, sacred music, all from various time periods, as well as music from various countries. Presently his musical activities are focused on Romantic and “verista” Italian opera repertoire. In the field of opera he has collaborated with many sector personalities: singers such as Garbis Boyagian, Luciana Serra, Giuseppina Arista, Katia Ricciarelli, Gianluca Terranova, Amarilli Nizza, Daniele Zanfardino, Jessica Pratt, Veronica Simeoni, Michela Sburlati, Alda Caiello, directors such as Marcello D’Ellena, Otello Camponeschi, Francesca Migneco, Beppe Chierici, collaborator masters of the calibre of Rolando Nicolosi.
Bongiovanni also leads a very busy teaching schedule, where he specializes in first reading and ear training, in traditional opera interpretation, in choral and orchestral conducting, in composition, in interpretation of music and music memorizing at Conservatory, Universities and various Musical Academies: University of Szeged (Hungary), University of Brno (Czech Republic), University of Krems an der Donau (Austria), University of Oradea (Romania), University of Rzeszów (Poland), Masterclassinitaly by Aulico-Opera&Musica and il Suono in Movimento (Luxembourg), Deutsche Schule Rom. He is teacher of Music Theory at Conservatory “L.Perosi” of Campobasso.
Contemporarily, Bongiovanni continues to compose and publish his works with various Italian publicists (Ed.Setticlavio; AltrEdizioni; MotoContrario), as well as his musicological work. He has revised and performed unpublished music of composers from the 700’s and 800’s such as A. Scarlatti, S. Bolis, L. Leo, P. Terziani, G.B. Pergolesi, A. Bencini, G. Capocci and many others. His last work: “Robert Valentine, 1671-1747: Sonate op.XII per Flauto Traversiero e Basso Continuo” (Edizioni ETS, 2015). Bongiovanni wrote and published many didactic books; his last work his “Musical Perception: from the harmonic dictation to the polyphonic dictation” with CD-Rom (Rugginenti-Volonté Editions, 2018).
He is invited as a speaker and/or performer at international symposia; for example, at the “DHI Rom- Historical Germanic Institute in Rome” he conducted the musical performances for the presentation of the new full score << Niccolò Piccinni, La buona figliuola, critical edition edited by Francesco Paolo Russo, Kassel [etc.]: Bärenreiter, 2017 (Concentus musicus 16) >>. Bongiovanni is the Artistic Director of the PitiglianoInMusica Festival in Pitigliano (Tuscany), and of the music association Aulico Opera&Musica in Rome, for whose activity he receives an official commendation in 2005 from the President of the Italian Republic Hon.
